Weak global demand dampens Sarawak’s wood-based products export

Sarawak’s wood products exports in 1Q/2016 fell 2% to RM1.62 billion compared to RM1.65 billion during the same period in 2015. The decline is the most obvious in the main importing countries such as Japan, Taiwan, China, Thailand and the Middle East. Plywood, Sarawak’s main export product fell almost 14% in value to RM791.5 million during the first half of this year.

The East Malaysian state is considering measures to support the local industry by promoting the Sarawak Timber Legality Verification System (STLVS) to drive international recognition.
