Valmet will modify the recovery boiler at Stora Enso’s Varkaus mill in Finland, including the installation of a new secondary superheater.

The companies have also signed a three-year cooperation agreement covering process monitoring and operator training to support ongoing performance improvements at the mill.

Stora Enso supplies renewable products for the packaging, biomaterials and wood products industries. The Varkaus mill has an annual production capacity of 420,000 tonnes of containerboard and 335,000 tonnes of pulp.

“We value Valmet’s technical expertise and long experience with recovery boilers,” said Antti Aartolahti, operations manager at Stora Enso’s Varkaus pulp mill. “We expect the new superheater and additional modifications to bring further stability to the mill’s operation and lower its maintenance costs.”

The project will replace the recovery boiler’s existing secondary superheater with a tubular superheater supplied by Valmet. The current superheater arrangement will be modified as part of the installation.

Valmet will also provide process monitoring services, including remote support and operator training. Maintenance services for the recovery boiler’s annual shutdown will begin in 2026, ahead of the new superheater installation in 2027.

“The boiler modification is a key lifecycle investment that helps Stora Enso ensure reliable production at the Varkaus mill,” said Karoliina Gunnila, sales manager of services, recovery, energy and circularity at Valmet.

The order was included in Valmet’s orders received for the second quarter of 2026. The value of the order and cooperation agreement has not been disclosed.

Delivery and installation are scheduled for Sep 2027.
