Sawn wood imports through China’s Manzhouli port soared 20% to 4.98 million cubic metres in 2015, accounting for one fifth all national imports. Korean Pine, Scots Pine and Larch make up about 90% of all imported sawn wood, according to data from Manzhouli Customs.
Since 2008 sawn wood imports have increased over 300%, from 1.20 million cubic meters in 2008 to 4.98 million cubic metres in 2015. Now at least half of all timber imports from the Manzhouli Port are sawn wood which is slowly overtaking log imports. Russia is one of the main reasons for this sharp increase. It has been encouraging sawn wood exports and has imposed tariffs on logs since commercial logging is now banned in China’s Northeast and Inner Mongolia.
