New Zealand’s tallest and largest laminated building is well underway at Otago Polytechnic.

The $20 Mn student accommodation village in Dunedin is made from Cross Laminated Timber (CLT), a first for the university and the city. The engineered wood products are pre-fabricated in Nelson on the south island.

Otago Polytechnic Chief Executive, Phil Ker, is thrilled. “This is the first fully owned Otago Polytechnic student residence. It will provide top class accommodation and has many sustainability features. It’s terrific to see the process underway,” Ker said in an interview.

The Student Village will have 231 beds and include single dormitory rooms, studios and four-bedroom apartments.

It will be ready by January 31, 2018, in perfect time for the new term.
