A recent meeting between Malaysia’s timber industry players and German policymakers enabled representatives from both countries to discuss sustainable forest management (SFM) practices and forest certification, and to promote the uptake of PEFC certified timber from Malaysia, the Malaysian Timber Certification Council (MTCC) said in a press release.
“The SFM agenda is a global one and it needs the collaboration of global communities. We believe continuous dialogue and engagement is vital to raise awareness among decision makers and industry players about the importance and benefits of sustainable forestry and forest certification. The meeting with our German counterparts has enabled us to share the progress of SFM in Malaysia and explore new opportunities for collaboration between Malaysia and German policymakers and timber industry players,” said MTCC CEO, Yong Teng Koon.
The highlights of the working visit included meetings with the public procurement authorities from the cities of Berlin and Dusseldorf and German Do-it-yourself (DIY) store chain, Hornbach. Mr Yong, together with Ms Sheam Satkuru-Granzella, the International Vice Chairperson for the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC), took the opportunity to encourage the related parties to consider incorporating PEFC certified timber from Malaysia into their practices.
“Currently, only 10 per cent of the world’s forests have been certified, of which 1 per cent comprises tropical forests. The above scenario highlighted that concerted efforts are needed to encourage and promote SFM of the world forests, in particular tropical forest. In this regard, the acceptance of PEFC certified timber from Malaysia in the public procurement policies by the various states of Germany would definitely be a significant step in the right direction” commented Yong.
As a PEFC-endorsed scheme, the MTCS has been accepted under the national timber procurement policies of Germany. As of December 2015, Malaysia has exported a cumulative total of over 1 million cubic meters of certified tropical timber to 49 destinations all over Asia Pacific, the Middle East, Europe, South Africa, the United States (US) and Canada. Of this total, some 868,332 cubic metre or 82.93% have been exported to Europe with 5% of the total volume exported to Germany.
