A ‘Specialised Marketing Mission’ for Malaysian furniture makers to Mumbai registered sales of RM44 million (~US$10 million), according to the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE).
The trade mission, which involved eight Malaysia’s furniture suppliers, was organised as part of MATRADE’s ‘quick win’ measures to boost exports of Malaysian furniture products globally. The trip to India provided Malaysian companies an opportunity to meet with India’s largest retailers and project owners.
India was identified as a high potential furniture market for its growing middle class and an increasing expendable income. In 2014, India was the 8th largest consumer of furniture and among the top five retail markets in the world. In the first 10 months of 2015, Malaysia was the second largest furniture exporter to India after China, with furniture exports jumping 37.5% to RM270.1 million (US$61.2 million).
