Log exports from Cameroon to the EU drop in Q1/2018

Timber log exports from Cameroon to the European Union (EU) totalled 3,400 metric tonnes for the first quarter of 2018, signalling an 11 per cent drop as compared to the first quarter of 2017.

According to the Journal du Cameroun, the fall could be attributed to Cameroonian lumberjacks moving to the more flexible Chinese market when faced with the EU’s stricter voluntary partnership agreements on responsible and sustainable use of forests.

Another reason behind the drop in wood exports could be the rising process of timber exports from Cameroon, as under the Finance Act 2018, the government of Cameroon increased taxes on log exports.
