Japan’s consumer confidence index at a three-year high

In December 2016, Japan’s consumer confidence index rose, an improvement for the first time in three months. The rise in the December index was the highest for more than three years.

Analysts in Japan have offered little explanation for this surge in confidence and, while welcoming the upward trend. But the government remains cautious as the change in confidence over a short period may not indicate an overall improvement.
