Innovations4Flooring emerges victorious in European Patent Office case against Unilin

In Willemstad, the capital of Curaçao, Innovations4Flooring (I4F), a technology company providing flooring installation solutions, disclosed on March 8th, Wednesday that it won a European Patent Office (EPO) opposition case against the Unilin group. In the case, I4F’s 3L TripleLock EP2440724 was validated and confirmed by the EPO’s opposition division, and all the oppositions Unilin filed on the patent were repudiated. This signifies the considerable breadth of protection all the licensees of I4F’s 3L TripleLock have across Europe.

I4F’s 3L TripleLock has patents and protection granted in numerous nations worldwide, and there are still various patent applications pending for the one piece drop-lock technology. The EPO authorised another new European divisional* for 3L TripleLock, EP2719845, thus giving licensees further legal certainty of its innovative individuality and widening the sphere of its protection in Europe. No competition has ever made a successful opposition to this patent, proving the soundness and durability of 3L TripleLock’s patent composition.

Presently, I4F is already being employed on millions of square meters of various flooring types, including wooden flooring panels, laminate, luxury vinyl tiles (LVT), multi-layer flooring (MLF), and rigid core flooring (RCF). I4F is the original designer and maker of this truly innovative one piece drop-lock solution based on a threefold engaging system technique suitable for wooden flooring panels, laminate, LVT, MLF, and RCF. Additionally, the company is protected by a solid international patent portfolio.

“This latest victory is yet another example of how Unilin’s market behaviour is based more on threats than on facts. The EPO’s decision is yet further reinforcement of our patent’s strength and its added value for our licensees. They have rock-solid protection to use 3L TripleLock across Europe and are free to choose which system they, and their customers, prefer. This is another leap forward on our path to revolutionise the global flooring industry through freedom of choice and game-changing innovations.” John Rietveldt, CEO of Innovations4Flooring, said.

*A European divisional is a patent application based on the same subject matter as the ‘parent’ patent, while the invention is characterised in dissimilar formulated claims.

Innovations4Flooring is a privately-own technology company based in Willemstad, Curaçao that focuses on the development of flooring installation solutions and patents. The majority stake of the company is held by a Dutch private equity group.

The one-of-a-kind drop-lock installation technique presented by 3L TripleLock and Click4U removes the need for a supplementary insert on the short side of the flooring panel. This removal allows manufacturers to enhance productivity levels while also bringing down costs and their carbon footprint. International patents and patent applications for I4F’s technologies have been authorised and filed in upwards of 100 countries around the world. While 3L TripleLock offers an innovative drop-lock installation, Click4U supplies an angle system on the long side and a drop-lock installation on the short side. This solution is suitable for wooden flooring panels, wood plastic composite, laminate, LVT, MLF, and RCF.
