The Indonesian designer has developed his KARANA Collection with four new pieces and American hard maple, which will debut on 15 Aug 2026 at JIA Curated, Bali.
The American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC) is revisiting its collaboration with Indonesian designer Hendro Hadinata with KARANA Habitat, the second chapter of the KARANA Collection, first unveiled at Indonesia Design Week 2025.
KARANA Habitat will debut on 15 Aug 2026 at JIA Curated in Bali, expanding the original collection of three sculptural pieces — the Kuta Bench, Sanur Lounge Chair and Ubud Light — into a wider collection for living and dining spaces.
Four new pieces have been added: the Klungkung Sofa, Negara Dining Chair, Negara Armchair and Negara Dining Table. The material palette has also been expanded, with American hard maple joining red oak and cherry.
“Each timber species has its own distinctive grain and colour — maple, red oak and cherry. Although they are different, they complement one another beautifully. Rather than arranging them in random patterns, we bring the three species together into a cohesive piece, creating a harmonious visual composition,” said Hadinata.
The collection draws on American hardwoods sourced from forests managed for long-term regeneration. American hardwood forests are the largest and most diverse temperate hardwood resource in the world. Forest volume has more than doubled since the 1950s, while annual growth has continued to exceed harvest, according to AHEC.
More than 22 commercial timber species are found in the forests. For KARANA Habitat, Hadinata focuses on American cherry, red oak and hard maple, three widely available but underused species suited to furniture production.
KARANA Habitat is part of a wider presentation by Studio Hendro Hadinata at Lintang Pavilion, a joint exhibition with Studio Aliri, Nusae and Tradisi exploring architecture, collaboration and shared cultural practice. Lintang Pavilion runs from 13–17 Aug 2026 at JIA Curated, Bali.
The KARANA Habitat launch will take place on 15 Aug at Lintang Pavilion, Pengembak Beach, Bali. Hadinata will introduce the collection and discuss his experience of developing it. Visitors to JIA Curated are welcome to attend the event and view the collection.
