China: Furniture industry doing well but lacks global brand presence

China’s furniture industry may be growing at a healthy rate but still lacks an international brand presence.

There were about 6,000 major furniture manufacturing enterprises recorded in operation in 2017, an increase of 439 compared with the previous year. The turnover of the top furniture manufacturing enterprises in 2017 topped 906 billion yuan.

At present, Chinese furniture products still dominate the middle and lower end of the value chain in the international markets.

The government and the industry plan to nurture a number of outstanding enterprises with international influence and create internationally-recognised brands to enhance competitiveness, consolidate and improve its position in the international arena.

Compared with well-known furniture brands in Europe and the United States, there is still yet to be a furniture brand in China that is recognised worldwide.
