Architecture, Materials, Systems— BAU 2019 Part 1

BAU 2019 is bigger than ever before. On 200,000 square metres of indoor exhibition space, this event showcases architecture, materials and systems for commercial and residential construction and interior design, for the new-build and renovation as well as modernisation. In a multi-part series, we look at the main focuses in the individual sections of the show. In this first part, the spotlight is on stones/soils/building materials and joining solutions, tiles/ceramics, energy/building systems/solar technology and BAU IT.

Stones / Soils / Building materials and Joining solutions

This section of the exhibition contains information on a broad range of materials such as stones, soils, sand-lime, plaster and renders, pumice and fibre-cement building materials and insulation materials. Also, visitors can find out about the different solutions for prefabricated construction, dry interior work and facade systems. In focus will be the latest developments in sustainability, energy-efficiency, design and innovation.

That applies also to the building material concrete, which will again be a separate focus at the upcoming BAU. On over 1,000 square metres of space, the InformationsZentrum Beton, together with 13 partner companies, will be presenting the full diversity of this material and its applications.


In the coming year, the section on BAU-IT, the biggest software show of this kind in Europe, will for the first time be taking up an entire exhibition hall (Hall C5), comprising 10,000 square metres. Here visitors can find IT solutions of all kinds from the fields of CAD, AVA, project planning, measurement technology, project management and controlling. The German association of building software (Bundesverband Bausoftware) is organising a 178-square-metre joint stand at the show.

Many exhibitors at the upcoming BAU will be presenting new developments in Building Information Modelling (BIM). In future, there has to be greater control and assurance in planning and building processes, and there must be more transparency. Among other things, this aims at avoiding time- and cost-intensive planning and coordination errors at an early stage. The use of BIM methodology brings key benefits here. The building software suppliers are offering corresponding software solutions that are attuned specifically to the building process.

For the first time, BAU will be featuring a “Digital Village” in 2019. Digital initiatives in the field of building are the focus here. Next to a small forum, there will be a chance for start-ups, software suppliers and other representatives from the building industry to present their digital concepts for the future. At BAU 2019, there will again be the presentation of the winners in the competition “Built on IT—Building the Future”. Since 2002, this Germany-wide competition has taken place annually, and so far over 150 works have won awards.

Tiles / Ceramics

Mankind has been familiar with ceramics, including in the form of tiles, for thousands of years. Yet this material keeps surprising us with its almost unlimited potential as regards design and applications.

At BAU 2019, for example, an innovative method for “dry laying” of ceramic floor coverings will be presented: It dispenses entirely with the need for adhesives and enables the flooring to be laid eight times faster.

Also presented at BAU will be aesthetic and conceptual solutions for the use of ceramic tiles in different areas such as shop fittings, health & care, catering and premium residential construction. One example is the facade of the Belgrade Plaza in Coventry (UK) which has a surface area of over 10,000 square metres. It was completed in autumn 2017 according to plans by the SimpsonHaugh and Partners Group.

In terms of designs, the trend is towards subtle, many-layered compositions and nuances, often in combination with visual effects and interesting textures. Digital printing and sculptural reliefs offer a broad palette of design options here. But also as regard to formats, creatives have a rich seam to mine—from 1×1 cm mosaics to XXXL dimensions: It´s all there.

Energy / Building systems / Solar technology

In the field of building systems, solar technology is becoming ever more important. A key term here is “home automation”. This refers not only to increasing digitalisation, as per the “smart home”, but also to the intelligent management of electricity consumption. Via corresponding control units, the heating systems and devices in a home can be automatically controlled in order to efficiently manage and coordinate the electricity produced by the systems and the level of consumption. The times at which these devices come into operation are determined by the energy supply and prices.

As well as the themes of solar building and solar thermal technology, BAU will also feature many new developments in heating, ventilating and air-conditioning. Highly efficient heat generation enables, for example, ground- or air-based heat pumps in split or monoblock construction. Modern solutions are especially quiet, compact, space-saving and low in maintenance, and also flexible in terms of connection and design. All of which gives users more options for improving their home comfort. The new products and innovations are also interesting for home-owners and home-builders because of the grants that are available for energy-efficient building.
